Charles Brantley Eyes Historic Season with MSU Football
Charles Brantley, the standout cornerback, is back for his final year at Michigan State after a five-year absence, aiming to make a historic impact on the team.
Brantley has appeared in 34 career games (24 starts) over the past five seasons with 104 tackles, 23 passes defended, and five interceptions. He made his biggest mark in that freshman year win over Michigan, but he also set a school record with a 100-yard pick-six against Prairie View A&M in 2024.
Defensive coordinator Joe Rossi is expecting a lot out of the standout cornerback. "I'm hoping to get his best year," Rossi said Monday after the fourth practice of Michigan State's fall camp. Brantley has been limited in practice since the spring, but Rossi expects that to change shortly.
Rossi listed Brantley as one of his smartest football players on the defensive side. He is also among the most experienced, especially at the Power Four level. Brantley's return was a significant boost for the program, which had a 4-8 season last year.
The 23-year-old has been a leader in the cornerbacks group, helping to bring along new transfers Tyran Chappell and Tre Bell. "Chuck's been a great leader," Bell said. "Obviously, he's really successful here, so I'm trying to learn from him as well." Brantley's experience and leadership will be crucial in helping the team navigate the upcoming season.
Brantley's transfer to Miami (Fla.) last season was a setback, but he's now back at Michigan State, where he was one of the biggest offseason adds for new head coach Pat Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald took over after a 4-8 season led to the firing of Jonathan Smith. Brantley's return has given the team a much-needed boost of confidence.
Brantley has been working hard to get back into shape, and Rossi expects him to be fully cleared for practice soon. "He's working, and he's practicing," Rossi said. "They'll be taking the restrictors off here in a little bit. But he's going. He's good, and I'm excited." The team is optimistic about Brantley's chances of having a historic season.
With Brantley back on the team, Michigan State is looking to make a strong push in the upcoming season. The team's chances will depend on Brantley's ability to stay healthy and perform at a high level. If he can do so, it could be a historic season for both him and the team.
