Philadelphia Phillies manager Don Mattingly announced Monday that Bryce Harper will move back to right field to make room for the team's new second baseman, Luis Arráez, acquired from the San Francisco Giants.
Harper, who played his first 11 seasons primarily in the outfield, has been at first base or designated hitter since undergoing offseason Tommy John surgery in 2022. Now, at 33, he's willing to move back to the outfield to accommodate Arráez, who will make his Phillies debut on Tuesday.
The infield shuffle is a result of the Phillies having one too many infielders after the Monday trade. Alec Bohm will move from third base to first, Bryson Stott will move from second base to third, and Arráez will take over at second base. Trea Turner, struggling with 18 errors in 106 games, will remain at shortstop.
Mattingly credited Harper's willingness to change positions as "key" to the trade. "Harp had already kind of talked — we had to make sure Harp was serious about playing the outfield," Mattingly said. "I think that was kind of the key to doing anything." Harper will "ease" back into the outfield, but what that means in practice isn't clear.
The Phillies' decision to keep Turner at shortstop despite his struggles is also telling. Mattingly said there were "zero" conversations about moving Turner from his position. Turner's track record suggests he might not improve on defense, and the Phillies might be prioritizing his offense, which has been a bright spot for the team.
In Harper's return to the outfield, the Phillies are counting on his throwing arm being in good enough shape. Harper's had time to recover from surgery, and Mattingly believes he can handle the demands of playing right field. The Phillies will be watching Harper closely as he eases back into the outfield.
The team's infield logjam has been a topic of discussion all season. The Phillies have been trying to find the right balance between offense and defense, and the trade for Arráez adds another dimension to their lineup. With Harper back in the outfield and Turner at shortstop, the Phillies are looking to find a rhythm that will propel them through the remainder of the season.
As the Phillies look to make a push in the standings, they'll need Harper to adjust quickly to life back in the outfield. The team's next move will be crucial in determining how well they can handle the upcoming stretch of games.
