Chiefs target Jaguars’ Brian Thomas Jr. with second-round pick to bolster wide receiver depth

The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly preparing to offer a second-round pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., aiming to strengthen their receiving corps amid injury concerns. The move signals the Chiefs’ urgency to add depth for Patrick Mahomes, following a strong start to the 2026 NFL season but ongoing struggles at the wide receiver position.

Kansas City sits at 4-0 after five weeks and is coming off their bye week, but the wide receiver group has been hit hard by injuries. Tyquan Thornton is out indefinitely, while Rashee Rice is dealing with a lingering hamstring injury sustained in Week 4. Beyond those two and Xavier Worthy, the Chiefs’ receiving options are limited. Jalen Royals and Cyrus Allen, two players who impressed during training camp and preseason, have yet to prove themselves against NFL starters. Meanwhile, Travis Kelce, at 35, remains a valuable target but is increasingly a safety valve rather than a central figure in the passing game. The Chiefs’ rushing attack performs well, but they need more reliable receivers to keep defenses honest.

The Chiefs’ interest in Brian Thomas Jr. comes after the Houston Texans made a similar move earlier this week by acquiring Marvin Harrison Jr. from the Arizona Cardinals. Harrison Jr., once the fourth overall pick, has struggled in recent seasons, and his trade to Houston reportedly brought a second-round pick back to Arizona. Thomas Jr. has followed a comparable pattern.

Selected by Jacksonville in the first round after a standout college career at LSU, Thomas Jr. had a promising rookie season with 87 catches for 1,282 yards and ten touchdowns. However, his production has declined since then. In 2025, he caught just 48 passes for 707 yards and two touchdowns, with his catch rate dropping to around 52% and his drop rate rising to 11%. This season, Thomas Jr. has managed only 105 yards through five games and has been overshadowed by teammates Parker Washington, Jakobi Meyers, and to some extent tight end Brenton Strange.

The Jaguars have not indicated any willingness to trade Thomas Jr. so far. Sources close to the situation say the team is unlikely to part with him without a substantial offer. The Chiefs may face a steep asking price, possibly a first-round pick, given Thomas Jr.’s potential and the recent Harrison Jr. trade precedent.

Kansas City’s offer of a second-round pick would be a strong starting point in talks. A deal involving a third-round pick would be a clear win for the Chiefs, but the Jaguars are expected to hold out for more. Thomas Jr.’s speed, evidenced by his 4.33-second 40-yard dash at the combine, fits well with the Chiefs’ offensive scheme, which values quick receivers to stretch defenses and open lanes for running backs like Kenneth Walker.

The Chiefs’ need for a receiver who can contribute immediately is underscored by the current status of their roster. Thornton’s indefinite absence and Rice’s hamstring injury leave a thin group behind Worthy, Royals, and Allen. Adding Thomas Jr. would provide a former first-round talent who, despite recent struggles, could regain form in a new environment.

Reports confirm the Chiefs have not yet made an official offer, but a second-round pick is widely viewed as the best realistic starting point for negotiations. The Jaguars’ stance remains firm, and no trade has been finalized. Meanwhile, the Chiefs continue to assess their wide receiver options with the season underway and the trade deadline approaching.
