Barcelona will begin the 2027-28 season playing their home matches at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, the stadium on Montjuïc, as redevelopment work on the Camp Nou continues. According to ESPN, the club is not expected to return to their historic ground until January 2028.
The Catalan side has already spent time at the Olympic Stadium in recent seasons due to delays in the initial phase of Camp Nou’s renovation. The latest phase involves installing a new roof and expanding the stadium’s capacity. Once completed, the venue’s seating will increase to around 95,000, with a final target of 105,000 after the full redevelopment.
The Olympic Stadium, which hosted the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg between Barcelona and Internazionale that ended in a 3-3 draw, will serve as a temporary home for the first half of the 2027-28 campaign. This arrangement allows the club to carry out significant structural improvements without interrupting the team’s competitive schedule.
Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, has confirmed the club’s ambitions for the Camp Nou to host major international fixtures beyond the renovation. The stadium is already confirmed as the venue for the 2029 Champions League final. Laporta has also expressed hopes that the 2030 FIFA World Cup final might take place at Camp Nou, although that remains unconfirmed.
The redevelopment has faced setbacks, with work taking longer than originally planned, which forced the team to spend additional time at Montjuïc. The Olympic Stadium capacity is significantly smaller than Camp Nou’s historic figures but has proven a suitable alternative during periods of construction.
The project aims to modernise Barcelona’s home ground and enhance its position among Europe’s largest stadiums. The club’s return to Camp Nou in January 2028 will mark an important milestone in the renovation timeline, even though the full work will continue beyond that date.
Barcelona’s supporters will be watching closely to see if the redevelopment runs to schedule this time, especially given the impact of previous delays. The club’s presence at the Olympic Stadium in the first half of the 2027-28 season is now confirmed, with the expectation that matches will resume at Camp Nou from the new year.
