Scott Effross, a 40-year-old former Yankees reliever, has signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners, according to the team's Triple-A affiliate.
The Mariners, struggling to find consistency in their recent games, have been trying to boost their bullpen depth. The team is 3-7 in their last 10 games and needs a strong finish to the regular season to make the playoffs.
Effross, 40, has thrown 85.1 Major League innings since 2021. However, he missed the entire 2023 season and most of 2024 due to Tommy John Surgery.
Before signing with the Mariners, Effross was released by the Detroit Tigers after appearing in 36.1 Triple-A innings. During that stint, he struck out only 16% of opponents and posted a league-average 42% ground-ball rate, according to Anthony Franco of MLB Trade Rumors.
Effross' most successful season came in 2022 with the Chicago Cubs and Yankees, where he posted a 2.54 ERA with 62 strikeouts and just three home runs allowed in 56.2 innings.
The Yankees non-tendered Effross after he appeared in just 11 games during the 2025 season, missing the first six weeks due to a left hamstring strain.
Effross features a funky sidearm delivery and doesn't light up the radar gun. The signing is expected to provide the Mariners with some much-needed bullpen depth as they look to make a push for the playoffs.
The Mariners will need to regroup and get back to their winning ways, starting with their current series against the New York Yankees.
