MIAMI (AP) — Sandy Alcantara pitched four-hit ball over seven sharp innings, Kyle Stowers homered and the Miami Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 on Tuesday night.
Sandy Alcantara has once again proved his dominance on the mound, tossing seven shutout innings to lead the Marlins to their second straight win.
The Marlins' win was a result of a strong team effort, with Xavier Edwards contributing with a single and two walks, and Liam Hicks notching two hits.
In a game where offense was scarce, the Marlins managed to capitalize on a single opportunity, with Kyle Stowers hitting a home run in the first inning.
The home run, off Phillies starter Aaron Nola, proved to be the decisive blow, as the Marlins were unable to muster any further offense against Nola and the Phillies bullpen.
Alcantara (11-6) struck out five and walked one, marking his major league-leading 16th quality start and the 111th of his career, surpassing Ricky Nolasco for the franchise record.
The Marlins' bullpen, meanwhile, was perfect in their one inning of work, with Calvin Faucher throwing a perfect eighth and Pete Fairbanks closing with another perfect inning for his 14th save.
Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber, who leads the National League with 33 homers, didn't play due to a gastrointestinal illness.
The Marlins' victory marked their second straight win after ending a franchise-record 12-game losing streak Monday.
Alcantara's performance was also notable for his ability to shut down the Phillies' offense, despite allowing only four hits.
In the sixth, Bryce Harper and Alec Bohm hit consecutive two-out singles against Alcantara, but the 30-year-old right-hander struck out Brandon Marsh looking to end the threat.
Center fielder Jakob Marsee made a standout defensive play, tracking down a drive by Harper and making a leaping catch at the wall to lead off the fourth.
Third baseman Graham Pauley also made a notable play, diving and catching Edmundo Sosa's line drive for the first out in the seventh.
Nola allowed one run and five hits over 5 2/3 innings, walking three and striking out four as Philadelphia slipped to 3-8 since the All-Star break.
The Marlins will look to continue their winning streak when they take on the Phillies again on Wednesday, with LHP Jesús Luzardo (9-5, 3.31) set to start for the Phillies. The Marlins have not announced a starter.
