Alexander Albon fires back at Toto Wolff with a cheeky jab on a recent episode of F1's Grill the Grid, leaving those around him in stitches.
The popular series pits the entire Formula 1 grid against each other in a range of entertaining challenges, with points awarded across multiple episodes. In the latest installment, drivers were tasked with identifying the identity of past and present Formula 1 drivers by looking at the teams they have raced for throughout their careers.
Albon, currently driving for Williams, couldn't resist taking a light-hearted swipe at his former team, Red Bull, during the challenge. "I was like, 'There's no driver that had this. Everyone's been fired at this point,'" he said, joking about Red Bull's history of dropping drivers after only a few months.
The comment is a clear jab at Red Bull's management, particularly team principal Toto Wolff. Albon's jibe comes after a string of high-profile driver departures from the Austrian-based team.
Red Bull has a history of hiring and firing drivers quickly, with Albon himself being a notable example. He was dropped by Red Bull in 2019, only to be replaced by Alex Albon's current teammate, Nicholas Latifi, at the time.
Albon's comment on the Grill the Grid episode has sparked a reaction from the Formula 1 paddock, with many seeing it as a sign of the ongoing tension between Albon and Red Bull.
The driver's comment also comes as he is set to lose his current race engineer, Tom Hart, who is expected to join Red Bull next season. Albon's team, Williams, had hoped to secure Hart's services but were ultimately unsuccessful.
Williams will now have to look elsewhere for a new race engineer, with Albon revealing that he has been involved in the process of identifying candidates. "We obviously went for Tom, I think Tom's a great guy, a great engineer, but we've also got ideas in place," he said.
The search for a new race engineer comes as James Urwin prepares to step away from his current trackside duties and transition into a factory-based role within Williams. Albon explained that the team has already drawn up a shortlist of possible replacements, with Tom Hart being one of the names on the list.
As the Formula 1 paddock heads into the second half of the season, Albon's comment on the Grill the Grid episode is a clear indication of the ongoing tension between him and Red Bull. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the coming weeks and months.
