Gregor Kobel grew up in ZΓΌrich and moved to Hoffenheim’s academy as a teenager. He made his Bundesliga debut there and had loan spells at Augsburg and VfB Stuttgart, then joined Stuttgart permanently.
Borussia Dortmund signed him in 2021, and he has been their first-choice goalkeeper ever since. Kobel is a commanding presence who combines reflex saves with quick distribution, and he played a big part in Dortmund’s run to the 2024 Champions League final.
Kobel has also become Switzerland’s first-choice goalkeeper, succeeding Yann Sommer.
Playing style
Kobel is a tall, agile goalkeeper whose reflexes at close range are among the best in the Bundesliga. He covers his near post well, gets down quickly to low shots and is brave when coming off his line to smother one-on-ones. His distribution has improved markedly since his arrival at Dortmund: he now plays short passes under pressure to start attacks and can also hit accurate long balls to the forwards. He commands his area confidently on crosses. His performances in the 2023/24 Champions League, including clean sheets against Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final, were central to Dortmund’s run to Wembley.
International career
Kobel spent several years as understudy to Yann Sommer in the Switzerland squad, travelling to the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024 as back-up. After Sommer’s international retirement in 2024, he became Switzerland’s first-choice goalkeeper and one of the senior figures in the national team.
Career in numbers
Across 10 seasons of senior club football, beginning in 2017/18, Kobel has played 311 matches for 4 clubs. His busiest campaign was 2024/25, when he played 52 matches for Borussia Dortmund. So far in 2026/27 he has made 6 appearances for Borussia Dortmund. The full season-by-season record is in the Stats section of this profile.
