Wisconsin upgrades Emerson Mandell and Ryan Schwendeman for Big Ten opener

Wisconsin’s right guard Emerson Mandell and tight end Ryan Schwendeman are now probable for the Badgers’ Big Ten opener against Penn State on September 25 after being listed as questionable earlier in the week. Mandell, who returned last week after spring foot surgery and played 26 snaps, and Schwendeman, sidelined since the season opener against Notre Dame, were both upgraded in the latest availability report.

The developments came a day after running back Abu Sama and receiver Malachi Coleman were also moved from questionable to probable. Sean West, the junior punter from Homestead High School, was added as probable for the game, marking the only other change on Wisconsin’s injury list.

Several players remain out for the Badgers, including cornerback Cai Bates, receiver Jaylon Domingeaux, offensive lineman Michael Roeske, and defensive tackle Xavier Ukponu. Running back Bryan Jackson is still questionable.

On the Penn State side, receiver Ethan Black was upgraded from questionable to probable. However, the Nittany Lions will be without their leading receiver Koby Howard for an extended period, according to coach Matt Campbell. Other notable absences include defensive end Lavar Arrington II, cornerback Joshua Johnson, and defensive end Max Granville, among others.

Penn State also listed offensive linemen Brock Riker and Dominic Rulli, along with tight end Andrew Rappleyea as questionable. Safety Omarion Davis is probable.

Wisconsin’s Mandell had not played this season until last week’s game, making his probable status a positive sign for the Badgers’ offensive line stability heading into the conference opener. Schwendeman’s return could provide an additional option at tight end after limited action this season.

The Big Ten opener will test both teams as they adjust to their injury situations and look to establish momentum early in the season.
