The final weekend of the 2026 MLB regular season will decide more than just final games as three teams fight for the last playoff spots. Going into Friday’s action, 10 of the 12 postseason places are locked down, but the AL West title and the third NL wild card remain open, with four teams battling for those spots.
The Houston Astros and Texas Rangers are locked in a win-or-go-home series in the AL West. Both teams have at most 82 wins and negative run differentials, meaning one will likely reach the playoffs with a losing record, a first in MLB history if it happens. Houston holds the tiebreaker in case of a tie due to a better season series against Texas, raising the stakes for the final three games of the regular season.
In the AL Central, the Chicago White Sox trail the Cleveland Guardians by one game but hold the tiebreaker. Chicago needs to make up a single game in the standings over the remaining matches to take the division and earn the second and final first-round bye on the AL side. The runner-up will end up as the sixth seed and face the Wild Card round.
Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox appear set to be the second wild card team. They hold a three-game lead over the White Sox and own the tiebreaker, making it impossible for Chicago to catch them in that race. However, the Guardians could overtake Boston if they lose their division lead, as Cleveland holds the tiebreaker over the Red Sox based on a better intradivisional record. Boston is two games ahead of Cleveland with three to play, and winning just one more game will lock them into the fifth seed.
In the National League, the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks are fighting for the third and final wild card spot. Arizona has won five straight but trails Philadelphia by two games. The teams split their season series evenly, so the intradivisional record will decide the tiebreaker, which currently favors Arizona. Philadelphia’s best chance to secure the wild card is to take two of three from the Tampa Bay Rays, who have no postseason stake.
The wild card seeding in the NL is still undecided with the San Diego Padres currently set to host the Wild Card Series. They lead the Chicago Cubs by one game, but the Cubs hold the tiebreaker, meaning a tie in the standings would put Chicago in the fourth seed. The Phillies trail the Padres by two games and the Cubs by one in the seeding race. Philadelphia holds the tiebreaker over San Diego but loses it to Chicago.
On the individual front, Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong became only the second player this season to achieve a 40-40 campaign on Thursday, hitting 40 home runs and stealing 40 bases. In the American League, Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez remains in contention for the Triple Crown, leading the league in home runs and batting average but trailing Baltimore’s Pete Alonso by eight RBIs. Alvarez faces a steep challenge over the weekend to close that gap.
The postseason begins on Tuesday with the Wild Card Series, and the final weekend will provide a definitive answer to which teams advance and which fall short after a season full of tight races and surprising turns.
