Sports Illustrated lists Notre Dame’s CJ Carr as a true Heisman candidate

Sports Illustrated has placed Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr among its top-10 “True Heisman Candidates” after Week 3, naming him ninth in the rankings. Carr was the magazine’s preseason Heisman pick but has yet to distinguish himself decisively in the early weeks of the season.

The SI report acknowledged Carr’s steady performance but noted he has not delivered a standout game against a major opponent. “Most of our other quarterbacks have had at least one excellent game against a big-time opponent,” it said. “(Carr) has been very good, but hasn’t done enough to separate himself from the pack so far. On Saturday against the Spartans, he was held without a touchdown pass for the first time this season, though he did add his first score on the ground. None of his three games have been bad at any stretch, but none has been particularly Heisman-worthy. He could find himself on the outside looking in soon without one.”

Carr’s season stats reflect solid efficiency. He has completed 72.6% of his passes for 726 yards and six touchdowns through Notre Dame’s first three games. His contributions include a rushing touchdown as well. The Fighting Irish have started the season 3-0 under his leadership.

Saturday will see Notre Dame visit Purdue, which currently holds a 1-2 record. This road game could be a chance for Carr to elevate his profile and respond to the scrutiny from Heisman watchers.

Carr’s standing in the SI rankings suggests that while he remains in the conversation, his hold on the Heisman spotlight is not guaranteed. The comments highlight the importance of delivering a breakout performance against a high-profile opponent to solidify candidacy. As of now, Carr’s consistent but unspectacular showing leaves room for others to move ahead.

Notre Dame’s next outing will be crucial for Carr’s Heisman hopes and for the team’s pursuit of an undefeated start. The Fighting Irish and their quarterback will look to use the game at Purdue to build momentum and perhaps silence doubts about their place among the season’s elite.
