DeBrincat scores power play goal in overtime to give Blackhawks 3-2 win over Buffalo

Alex DeBrincat scored a power play goal 33 seconds into overtime to give the Detroit Red Wings a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres in a preseason game on Thursday, September 24. The goal came off a one-timer from a pass by Lucas Raymond, securing Detroit’s second win in three preseason outings.

The game swung back and forth, with the Wings opening the scoring in the first period through Axel Sandin-Pellikka. The young defenseman converted a power play chance by firing a one-timer from a pass by Anton Johansson at 16:11. Both Sandin-Pellikka and Johansson have impressed during the preseason while competing for roster spots, with this goal being Sandin-Pellikka’s second of the preseason and Johansson tallying his fifth assist.

Buffalo responded in the second period when Jiri Kulich broke a 1-1 deadlock just 33 seconds in. Kulich took advantage of a two-on-one rush, kept control of the puck, and fired a shot that dribbled past Detroit goalie Daniil Tarasov.

Later in the third period, Buffalo’s Sheldon Dries tied the game at 2-2 by redirecting a shot from Jacob Bryson past goaltender Colten Ellis at 7:13. Ellis had replaced Alex Lyon, Buffalo’s starting goaltender and former Red Wing, who left late in the first period with an apparent left shoulder injury.

Trevor Kuntar also scored for Buffalo during the game, but the Sabres were unable to hold on as DeBrincat’s overtime strike clinched the win for Detroit.

The Wings will play one more preseason game on Saturday, hosting the Columbus Blue Jackets at 7 p.m. before the regular season begins. Detroit currently holds a 2-0-1 record in the preseason, a positive sign as they finalize their roster.
