Seattle Mariners eliminated from playoff race after latest loss

The Seattle Mariners were officially eliminated from postseason contention after the Texas Rangers defeated the New York Mets on Thursday. The Mariners needed both the Rangers and the Houston Astros to lose the remainder of their games to keep their playoff hopes alive, but Texas’s win ended any chance of Seattle advancing.

The Mariners still have four games left to play this season, all at home against the Los Angeles Angels. These final matchups coincide with a celebration of Rick Rizzs, the Mariners’ longtime broadcaster, who is retiring at the end of the season.

Seattle will face the Angels again tonight, September 24, at T-Mobile Park with the first pitch scheduled for 6:40 p.m. The team’s effort to finish the season strong will be watched closely by fans as they bid farewell to one of the franchise’s familiar voices.

Julio Rodríguez, Seattle’s center fielder, was seen taking in the game atmosphere during the bottom of the eighth inning against Houston on September 22. Despite Rodríguez’s presence and the Mariners’ push, the team could not secure the wins needed to stay in playoff contention.

With the postseason now out of reach, the Mariners will turn their attention to closing the season on a positive note. The next few days will also be a moment to honour Rizzs’s decades of work with the club as he prepares to step away from his broadcasting duties.
