Ngumoha discusses Iraola’s tactical shift that may improve his England prospects

Liverpool’s Rio Ngumoha has yet to score or assist in five appearances this season but remains in England’s squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures. The 18-year-old winger has seen a tactical switch under Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, who has deployed him on the right wing twice this season despite Ngumoha being a natural left winger.

Ngumoha told talkSPORT that the move has helped him become more unpredictable. “It’s been good. The gaffer at Liverpool has really been helpful. And all the coaching staff as well – I can’t speak highly enough of them,” he said. “But I’m enjoying it. I’m playing left-wing, right wing as well. So it’s given me another tool to destroy defenders.”

The ability to play on both flanks could improve Ngumoha’s chances of securing more regular appearances under England manager Thomas Tuchel. Ngumoha made his senior England debut in June during a friendly against New Zealand, having been part of England’s pre-World Cup training camp earlier in the year.

Despite stiff competition for attacking spots, Ngumoha believes consistent goal contributions will keep him in contention for major tournaments. He told talkSPORT he could make England’s squad for Euro 2028 if he “keeps getting goals and assists.”

Ngumoha is currently in line to feature when England face Spain at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. His versatility in attack may give Tuchel more options as the Three Lions prepare for the Nations League matches.
