Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald has apologised to Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton over comments he made that sparked a controversy about alleged spying on Broncos training sessions. Macdonald admitted his remarks, which were caught on leaked footage, were inappropriate and said he reached out to Payton directly to apologise.
In a recent interview ahead of Seattle’s game against the Washington Commanders, Macdonald addressed the fallout from the leak. He explained that he had spoken about Payton accusing him of spying after the Seahawks used clips from Broncos training sessions shared by fans to prepare for their matchup. Macdonald said the comments were never meant for public release and expressed regret over how the situation unfolded.
“It’s something that I didn’t intend for public use,” Macdonald said. “I thought it was the most appropriate thing to reach out to Sean and apologise to him for having that be public when it wasn’t meant to. It was something they have to deal with in real time; it wasn’t really on their end.”
He described the episode as a “lesson learned” and took full responsibility for what he said. “Honestly, I’ve got to be better in that moment. I’m responsible for what I say no matter the circumstances. Whether you’re mic’d up or you’re not, whether you have a certain type of understanding. I fell short in that moment. It stings for me, frankly.”
Macdonald praised Payton, calling him “a phenomenal football coach” and said they have developed a good relationship through owners’ meetings over the past few years. “Sean was great. I respect the heck out of him and his program; always have. He was awesome. We’re both looking forward to moving forward from this. I really appreciated how he handled it… I think it’s fair to say that if I’m talking, I’m responsible for what I’m saying.”
The controversy began when Macdonald revealed that Payton accused him of spying on Broncos training sessions, a claim that generated significant attention. The Seahawks had used clips from fan footage of the Broncos’ training to prepare, which Payton apparently viewed as an unfair advantage. Macdonald’s comments about the accusation were recorded and leaked, leading to criticism that he was trying to cast Payton in a negative light.
The Seahawks coach’s apology and willingness to take responsibility seem to have eased tensions between the two coaches. Both Macdonald and Payton appear ready to move beyond the incident as they focus on their respective teams’ upcoming challenges.
