Tyler Stephenson reflects on seven seasons with Liverpool

Tyler Stephenson spoke openly about the uncertainty surrounding his future with the Cincinnati Reds as he faces free agency following seven seasons with the club. Speaking to Reds.TV’s Jim Day during the Reds’ September 23 game against the Atlanta Braves, the catcher described the trade deadline period as a stressful introduction to the business side of baseball.

“I feel like with the trade deadline, everything going on, it was a lot,” Stephenson said. “Kind of (my) first time going through that, and how much this (organization) has meant to me. This is where I grew up and have become a player with this Reds' uniform and this Reds' organization. From top to bottom, I'm very thankful for it. I don't know what the future holds.”

Stephenson’s remarks came as the Reds prepared for what could have been his final game of the season, possibly on Sunday following the Toronto series. He plans to return to Cincinnati for a few days afterward to visit teammates and staff.

“I feel like I've already – it was bittersweet, especially with the last game possibly on Sunday,” he added. “But I'll be flying back to Cincinnati for a few days after the Toronto series, so (I'll) be able to see a few people, do some things. If it is the last time, I'm very thankful for it. Like I said, you kind of never know what the future holds. … If I'm back, I'd be very happy. Like I said, this is what I kind of grew up knowing. If not, then I've been very thankful for it.”

Stephenson has delivered a solid offensive performance this season, entering the game with a .246 batting average and 15 home runs. His form improved notably over the summer months, batting .288 in June and .339 in July. Over his seven seasons with the Reds, he has posted a .258 average and hit 78 homers.

Reds.TV analyst Jeff Brantley commented on Stephenson’s development during the broadcast, highlighting improvements beyond hitting.

“I think Tyler Stephenson has made a tremendous amount of progress since probably about the first part, middle of June to where we stand right now,” Brantley said. “Not just from a batting average or hitting standpoint. I think some of that comes with the Reds allowing him some time off behind the plate, where he's been the designated hitter, and allowed him to keep his legs underneath him as we've gotten to August and September. But I think his game-calling has gotten better, and I've incrementally seen his throwing get better as time has moved forward.”

Stephenson’s growth as a catcher has included refining his defensive skills and managing pitchers, which Brantley noted as key aspects of his progress this season.

The future remains undecided for Stephenson beyond this season, with free agency offering new possibilities after a lengthy tenure with Cincinnati. The player’s gratitude for the Reds and his connection to the organization were clear throughout his comments.
