Chargers evaluate four players ahead of long snapper decision

The Los Angeles Chargers signed rookie long snapper Spencer Triplett to their practice squad after working out four players at the position. The move was confirmed by ESPN’s Kris Rhim on X and comes shortly after the Chargers elevated wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling from the practice squad to the active roster.

Valdes-Scantling’s promotion followed the decision to place tight end David Njoku on injured reserve. Njoku will miss at least four weeks and is expected to be eligible to return in Week 8 when the Chargers face off against the Los Angeles Rams. Triplett replaces Valdes-Scantling on the practice squad.

Triplett enters the NFL after a six-year college career at North Carolina. In the 2023 season, he was part of a Tar Heels special teams unit that converted 22 of 24 field goals and all 51 extra-point attempts. His reliability in snapping and protection helped earn him a spot on the 2025 Patrick Mannelly Award Watch List, which recognizes the best long snapper in college football each year.

The Chargers’ workout of four players before signing Triplett indicates the team was thorough in evaluating options at the position, though details on the other candidates have not been disclosed. The signing represents a step toward solidifying depth on special teams, especially with the long snapper role being critical for field goals and punts.

Triplett’s addition to the practice squad gives the Chargers a fresh option at long snapper as they manage roster changes caused by injuries and tactical adjustments. The team’s recent moves reflect ongoing adjustments ahead of their Week 6 game, with the long snapper spot now filled by a player with a strong college background and recognition in his position.

The Chargers will continue to evaluate Triplett’s progress in practice as they prepare for upcoming games.
