Canyon Koonce was about five years old when he first told himself he wanted to play college baseball at Vanderbilt. On Wednesday, the Brownsburg junior outfielder made it official, announcing his commitment to the SEC program six days after taking an official visit to the Nashville campus.
Koonce, a 6-foot, 175-pound left-handed hitter, is rated the No. 2 player in Indiana and the 60th overall recruit in the 2028 class per Prep Baseball Report. He chose the Commodores over a field he narrowed down last month, drawn by the program's track record of developing hitters and the chance to face the best pitching in the country.
"I think if you would have asked me about five years ago where I wanted to play college baseball, I would have said Vanderbilt," Koonce said. "Being able to commit here was definitely a full circle moment for me. Ultimately, I just felt like Vanderbilt was the place that I wanted to play my college baseball at, and where I felt at home. Also, it's a four-hour drive and a 45-minute flight, so my family can come down and see me virtually whenever. So, it was just really a perfect fit."
The recruiting timeline moved quickly once schools were allowed to contact 2028 recruits on Aug. 1. Koonce spent the first week of August at the Area Code Games in Long Beach, California, performing in front of college and professional scouts. He went 6-for-14 with a triple and only one strikeout at the event.
Vanderbilt reached out shortly after his showing in California. He visited campus Thursday and committed six days later.
As a sophomore at Brownsburg, Koonce batted .367 with 10 RBIs, seven doubles, 20 runs scored, 11 stolen bases and eight walks against just seven strikeouts in 24 games. His coach has described him as a rising star who "goes out there and he rakes."
Koonce is the latest in a growing Indiana-to-SEC pipeline. Class of 2026 players Center Grove right-hander Gannon Grant (Tennessee), Mooresville RHP Hudson DeVaughan (Alabama), Shelbyville RHP Aiden Smith (Kentucky) and Guerin Catholic RHP Tate Troxell (Alabama) are all committed to SEC programs. Zionsville lefty Davis Moore will join Koonce at Vanderbilt. Moore's Zionsville teammate, former Fort Wayne Snider shortstop Isaiah Snavely, and Center Grove switch-hitting outfielder Drake McClurg are heading to Texas A&M next year. Fellow 2028 recruit Gavin McGee, formerly of Roncalli and now at P27 Baseball Academy, committed to Kentucky last month.
Koonce said he could not pass up the chance to compete in the SEC. Under coach Tim Corbin, Vanderbilt has become a consistent College World Series contender while producing 20 first-round picks in the MLB Draft.
"I'm going to be seeing the best pitchers in college baseball, so I'm definitely going to see pretty early on what I'm capable of, what I need to work on, and how I'm going to get better as a baseball player," Koonce said.
He acknowledged the recruiting process was stressful at times, but Vanderbilt offered everything he was looking for. His goals extend beyond college.
"The ultimate goal is to play in the MLB. So obviously, I want to go to Vanderbilt, and I want to win a national championship. But at the same time, I want to develop and accomplish the goal of playing in the big leagues. So, I think this is the first steppingstone in seeing where I measure up and stack up against the best players in the country."
