Leah Woodward scored three goals and added an assist as Dennis-Yarmouth opened its state title defense with a 6-1 win over Scituate in a non-league field hockey matchup. The Dolphins improved to 1-0-0 behind a first-half performance that put the game out of reach before the break.
Woodward, who was exceptional at handling the ball throughout, set the tone early. Aurora Quenneville added two goals, Sammie Precourt scored once, and Jenna Richard anchored the defensive effort while contributing two assists. Avery Post finished with one assist.
The win marks the first step in what Dennis-Yarmouth hopes is another deep postseason run after capturing the state championship last year. The Dolphins wasted little time establishing their attacking rhythm, with Woodward's hat trick coming as part of a balanced offensive display that saw five different players register at least a point.
Richard's two assists from the defensive end highlighted the team's ability to transition quickly from defense to attack. The Dolphins moved the ball efficiently through the midfield, creating repeated scoring chances against a Scituate side that struggled to contain the home team's pace.
The victory was part of a busy day across Cape Cod high school sports, with several other field hockey programs also in action.
Nauset edged Barnstable 2-1 in a dramatic finish, scoring with three minutes remaining to break a one-all tie. All three goals came after halftime. Emma Steenstra scored the only goal for the Redhawks on an assist from Cate Buckler, while Avery Croteau was strong defensively with multiple defensive saves. Izzy Hill played well in goal and made eight saves for Barnstable, which dropped to 1-1-0. Nauset improved to 2-0-0.
Sandwich secured an early season statement result with a 2-0 non-league win over Duxbury. The Blue Knights moved to 2-0-0 with the shutout victory over the Dragons.
In boys soccer, Cape Tech picked up its first win of the new campaign, beating Falmouth Academy 3-1 on the road. The Crusaders moved to 1-0-1, while the Mariners fell to 0-1-0. Freshman Davey Soule scored his first goal as a high school soccer player in the second half. Dominic Zuluaga and Noah Leveque provided solid play in the midfield, and Dylan Joyce made 12 saves in goal.
Girls volleyball results saw Dennis-Yarmouth swept 3-0 by Marshfield. Giulianna DeSouza led the Dolphins with seven kills, while Maya Turek and Emily Orman added four kills each. Alyssa Magee made eight assists and had two aces, and Aaylah Gomes recorded five digs and one assist in her varsity debut as an eighth grader. Dennis-Yarmouth dropped to 0-1.
Calvary Chapel Academy swept Sturgis West 3-0 on the road, sending the Navigators to 0-1 to open the season. Barnstable remained perfect, sweeping Duxbury 3-0 for its third straight victory to start the regular season. The Redhawks improved to 3-0.
For Dennis-Yarmouth, the field hockey opener offered an early glimpse of the squad's attacking depth. Woodward's hat trick grabbed the headlines, but the distribution across the lineup suggests the Dolphins have multiple scoring threats as they look to defend their title. Richard's two assists from the back line underscore the team's ability to build play from defense.
The Dolphins will look to build on the opening win as the non-league schedule continues. Scituate, meanwhile, will aim to regroup after conceding six goals in the season opener.
