William & Mary pulled off one of the most stunning comebacks in recent FCS history on Friday night, scoring 13 points in the final minute to stun No. 7 Villanova 35-32 in Patriot League action in Philadelphia.
The Tribe trailed 32-22 with under a minute remaining, but a sequence of events that included a made field goal, a recovered onside kick, a touchdown, an interception and a game-winning kick at the buzzer flipped the game completely.
Kicker Max Lipinski started the madness with a 40-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 32-25. William & Mary then recovered the ensuing onside kick, giving the offense one last shot.
Three plays later, quarterback Winston Watkins connected with wide receiver Kai Austin for a 37-yard touchdown. Lipinski added the extra point to tie the game at 32-32.
Villanova still had time to respond. The Wildcats moved into position for a potential game-winning drive, facing 3rd-and-10 at their own 35-yard line. But quarterback Pat McQuaide's throw downfield was picked off by Cade Ellis, who returned it to the Villanova 28-yard line with five seconds on the clock.
Lipinski then drilled a 45-yard field goal as time expired, completing the improbable road victory.
The numbers behind the collapse were stark. According to ESPN analytics, Villanova held a 99.8% win probability with just over two minutes remaining while leading 32-22.
McQuaide's night was a mixed bag. He threw three interceptions in total, the last of which proved decisive.
Social media reacted immediately. SportsCenter posted video of the final sequence, captioning it simply: "Then this happened." Chris Vannini of The Athletic broke down the sequence: field goal, onside kick recovered, touchdown, interception, field goal at the buzzer. The Sickos Committee called it "absolutely insanity." Pete Thamel welcomed the return of college football with the clip.
The comeback marks a statement opening win for William & Mary, who went into the season as underdogs against a Villanova side that entered the campaign ranked seventh in the FCS. For the Tribe, the win in Philadelphia sets an early tone in Patriot League play.
The reaction from the college football world was immediate and widespread. Stanford Steve noted it would be hard to top this game all weekend. Analyst Benjamin Solak singled out the onside kick as "perfect" and "gorgeous."
For Villanova, the loss is a brutal way to open the season. Leading by 10 with the game seemingly in hand, the Wildcats will spend the coming days reviewing how a 99.8% win probability turned into a season-opening defeat.
William & Mary, meanwhile, walk away with a signature win that will be replayed across highlight shows all weekend. The Tribe's ability to execute under extreme pressure — the onside kick recovery, the quick strike touchdown, the defensive stop and the kick at the buzzer — gave the FCS its first defining moment of the 2026 season.
