Fort Defiance is aiming to become the first team to win back-to-back Shenandoah District volleyball championships since the district's inception.
The 2026 Shenandoah District volleyball season is underway, with Fort Defiance looking to continue their impressive streak in district play since joining the Shenandoah in 2019. Fort has yet to lose a game in district play since then.
Fort Defiance returns a lot of firepower, including first team all-Shenandoah District right-side hitter Caroline Hanger, and second team setter Alexis Miller, libero Norah Anderson and middle Livia Clinedinst. The Indians also add middle Harper Carter, who could be a difference maker for Fort.
"This is probably one of the most well-rounded teams that we've had," said coach Amber Pitsenbarger. "I think that will be good because if one person has an off night we have so many other hitting options, our defensive players are great, we have multiple talented setters."
Wilson Memorial is the team most likely to challenge Fort Defiance for the Shenandoah District title. Wilson Memorial returns several key players, including Estee Irving, Maggie Parrott and libero Bree Kindig, all of whom made first team all-district a season ago.
Alleghany will have to replace some talented players, including middles Hannah Hensley and Taylor Stayton, and right-side hitter Lainie McCormick, who combined for 606 kills last season. However, first team all-state setter Kendra Dressler is back, and the senior had 820 assists a season ago.
Buffalo Gap returns a bulk of its team from last season, including outside hitter Bailey Tribble, who is the only all-district performer from a year ago. The Bison finished as regional runner-up and lost in the Class 1 state quarterfinals last season.
Riverheads returns everybody from last season, with a roster that is a good mix of veterans and young players. Senior Meleah Shirley is the only all-district and all-region player returning for Riverheads.
The Shenandoah District volleyball season will continue to unfold in the coming weeks, with Fort Defiance looking to make it two in a row as district champions. The Indians' well-rounded team and strong returners will be put to the test as they face off against other district teams, including Wilson Memorial and Alleghany.
