Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz are teaming up for the US Open mixed doubles event, marking Williams' return to the Grand Slam tournament after a two-year absence.
Returning to tennis at 44, Williams is not planning to play singles at the US Open. Nevertheless, she and Alcaraz have an opportunity to add another title at Flushing Meadows to their respective resumes. Williams has 10 U.S. Open championships: six in women's singles, two in women's doubles with sister Venus, and one in mixed doubles – with Max Mirnyi in 1998.
The defending men's singles champion Alcaraz has won the men's singles tournament twice, including four years ago when Serena initially stepped away from the sport. This year, Alcaraz is looking to add another title to his collection, and his partnership with Williams could be a strong contender for the prize.
The mixed doubles event is in its second year, with Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic also participating together. The pair will face one half of the reigning women's doubles champions, Erin Routliffe, and Lloyd Glasspool in the first round later Tuesday.
The winners of the mixed doubles event will receive a $1 million prize. The tournament will follow the first round and quarterfinals on Tuesday, with the semifinals and final taking place on Wednesday night.
