Schuylkill Valley Panthers Seek to Regain LL Section 5 Supremacy
The Schuylkill Valley Panthers are looking to regain their title as Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 5 champions after a disappointing 2025 season.
After finishing 5-6 in 2025, plagued by injuries, Coach Bruce Harbach's team managed to punch their ticket to the District 3 playoffs for the fourth consecutive year. However, they fell 35-7 in the quarterfinals at the hands of the eventual Class 3A champions, Trinity, for the second straight year.
Harbach attributed the loss to Trinity being a better football team, saying, "They were a better football team than we were. I think our kids learned a lesson that you have to prepare for anybody, whether good, bad, mediocre, or whatever. You have to come out and play a game of football."
The Panthers' struggles in 2025 were not entirely unexpected, given that they had lost three of their five regular-season losses by just one score against Fleetwood, Annville-Cleona, and Lancaster Catholic. If the ball had bounced a different way in those matchups, who knows, Schuylkill Valley could have three-peated as Section 5 champs.
The team is now focused on bouncing back in 2026, with senior quarterback Alex Aletras returning for his senior season after finishing fourth in the entire Lancaster-Lebanon League in passing yards and passing touchdowns with 1,752 yards and 21 touchdowns. Aletras has put on some weight this offseason but has gotten quicker in the process.
The senior has a strong arm and good legs underneath him, showcasing his skills with four rushing touchdowns in 2025. One of his top targets, senior receiver Alex Gehret, is also back after finishing with 25 receptions for 295 yards and one score.
Signs are pointing to a bounce-back season for Schuylkill Valley as Section 5 is set to be competitive for all 10 weeks, and possibly longer. The team's goal is to stay healthy and win close games this year.
"We're trying to stay healthy and win close games this year. That's our goal," Harbach said.
The Panthers have a talented roster, with several key players returning, including Aletras, Ervin Ortiz, and Gehret. They will need to stay the course, mentally out of the game, to achieve their goals.
Schuylkill Valley's schedule for the upcoming season includes a number of tough matchups, including a game against Berks Catholic on September 25 and a game against Annville-Cleona on October 30.
As the Panthers look to regain their title, they will need to pull out wins in close games and rely on Aletras' exceptional leadership and attention to detail. With Harbach's endorsement of his exceptional mental preparation, Aletras has a chance to lead the Panthers deep into the later months.
The season is set to begin on August 28, with the Panthers facing off against Conrad Weiser.
