LSU Women's Basketball Loses Ukrainian Star Kate Koval Amid International Tensions
LSU women's basketball has lost a key piece to its frontcourt, with center Kate Koval opting to leave the program due to personal reasons.
LSU women's basketball announced the departure on Monday, with head coach Kim Mulkey releasing a statement explaining the situation. "Kate came to see me on Sunday and told me that after much consideration, she will be leaving the program for personal reasons," Mulkey said in a statement.
Koval's decision to leave LSU is not entirely unexpected, given her background. The 20-year-old center is from Kyiv, Ukraine, and her father is part of the Ukrainian military, having fought in the war against Russia.
Koval transferred to LSU last season after starting her career at Notre Dame. She started 17 games and averaged 8.3 points and 6.3 rebounds while shooting 56% from the field per contest.
The specifics of her departure are unclear, but there is speculation that it has to do with LSU's signing of 17-year-old Anna Minaeva, a center from Russia. Mulkey told The Advocate that she talked to Koval before recruiting Minaeva.
"I want you to understand I'm not here to ask you to change how you feel about Russia," Mulkey said, recalling her conversation with Koval. "I'm just here out of respect for your family and out of respect for you to let you know. Because I know how personal it is for you."
LSU's signing of Minaeva had been seen as a potential breakthrough in international recruiting, with the two centers potentially becoming the first Russian-Ukrainian teammates to share a locker room in women's college basketball since Russia first invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Mulkey is set to enter her sixth season leading the Tigers this fall. The team will open the season against Southeast Louisiana on Nov. 2.
Koval's departure from LSU is a significant blow to the team's frontcourt, and it remains to be seen where she will end up playing next.
