Liverpool eyeing surprise Brighton star in place of Richard Hughes

Liverpool will reportedly hold transfer talks with Brighton tonight as they try to sign Yankuba Minteh.

The Reds have already seen two offers rejected for the winger but believe there's a real chance they get over the line with a third.

Meanwhile, sources suggest that Liverpool are actually eyeing a different Brighton star, one who has been overlooked in the transfer talks so far.

Diego Gomez, a Paraguayan winger, has been impressive for Brighton this season, and his skills could be exactly what Liverpool need to fix their squad problems.

Gomez got an assist in the win over Aston Villa and was unlucky not to have more than that. He could have ended up with a couple of goals and another couple of assists if things had gone his way.

Gomez is an incredibly unique player for this day and age – one who can conceivably play everywhere and do it well. His ability to operate as a centre-midfielder makes him a valuable asset for any team.

Liverpool need to fix a few different problems in their squad, notably on the right wing and in the middle of midfield. These are the exact positions that Gomez is best at fixing.

He moves between the two positions and in data models operates as a centre-midfielder. With that in mind, he has been ranked as the 12-most valuable midfielder in the Premier League last season and the most valuable 22-and-under.

Gomez's skills are not limited to just one area of the game. He's above average for shots, shots on target and conversion rate, and average for key passes. A true do-it-all midfielder who just so happens to tick the exact boxes Liverpool need.

The hype around Gomez is incredibly low for a player this valuable. If Liverpool can strike a deal, they may just get him well below his real value.
