Charles Leclerc Warns Ferrari Fans: Monza Might Not Be Their Day
Ferrari's home advantage at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza may not be as decisive as fans expect, according to Charles Leclerc.
With the Dutch Grand Prix officially in the rearview mirror, the Formula 1 paddock is packing up and heading straight for the “Temple of Speed.” For Ferrari, the Italian Grand Prix at Monza is always the most important and emotionally charged weekend on the entire calendar.
However, Leclerc has already attempted to manage the Tifosi's sky-high expectations by delivering a blunt reality check regarding Ferrari's technical prospects at their home circuit.
Speaking to the media following a highly frustrating, strategy-compromised race at Zandvoort, Leclerc admitted that Monza is a massive outlier on the F1 calendar, demanding extreme straight-line speed, ultra-low downforce setups, and supreme stability under heavy braking.
The current iteration of the Ferrari SF-26 might not possess the aerodynamic efficiency required to dominate those long straights against the likes of McLaren and Mercedes, according to Leclerc.
The data coming out of Maranello suggests they are already on the back foot “on paper,” which likely points to a lingering drag penalty built into the car's fundamental aerodynamic concept, or a slight deficit in deployment from the hybrid power unit at the absolute top end of the speedometer.
The Magic of Monza
Despite the looming technical concerns and the sobering reality of the data, the emotional weight of driving a Ferrari in Italy cannot be entirely discounted. The support of the home crowd historically pushes the Scuderia to extract every last ounce of performance from their machinery.
Leclerc, who famously secured an iconic, career-defining victory at Monza in 2019, knows firsthand how transformative the Italian energy can be.
The Italian Grand Prix will take place on September 3 at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza in Italy.
