The Alabama high school fall sports season has kicked off, and with it, The Tuscaloosa News is back with their Athletes of the Week. Readers have the chance to decide which athlete from the area had the most impressive performance each week. This week's nominees are chosen from the top performers list, compiled by coaches and team stat keepers.
Coaches and team stat keepers can send in stats to nominate players for top performer lists to sports@tuscaloosanews.com by 11 p.m. Friday. Voting will last until noon Thursday, Aug. 27.
Hale County's Marcus Bryant Jr. is the standout performer this week, with 252 yards and six touchdowns in a 42-22 win over Berry. His impressive display has earned him a spot among the top performers.
Hubbertville's Blaize Wakefield also made a strong impression, completing 14 of 26 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns in a 28-22 win over University Charter. He also added two interceptions on defense, showcasing his all-around skills.
Northside's Bennett Green rushed for 252 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries and added a fumble recovery for a touchdown in a 49-27 win over Winfield. His performance was a key factor in his team's victory.
Sipsey Valley's Isaiah Bennett rushed for 228 yards and three touchdowns on five carries in a 48-12 win over Marion County. His impressive display has put him in contention for the Athlete of the Week award.
Tuscaloosa Academy's Mark Norris threw four touchdown passes and rushed for another touchdown in a 33-12 win over Sulligent. His performance was a highlight of the week, but it remains to be seen if it will be enough to take the top spot.
