Griezmann’s First MLS Goal Sets Stage for Orlando’s Playoff Push

When Antoine Griezmann scores, Orlando City win. The Frenchman's first MLS brace powered the Lions to a 2-1 comeback victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night, securing a crucial three points and a playoff spot for the first time this season.

Griezmann's first goal arrived in the 53rd minute, when he capitalized on a saved attempt from Daryl Dike and tapped in at the back post. His second goal, a late match-winner, came in the 81st minute, after he followed up his attempted backheel and slotted the finish into the back of the net.

Griezmann's presence has become a primary driver of the Lions' recent resurgence as a playoff contender. With his brace, he now has six goal contributions (4g/2a) across nine appearances in all competitions. "When we scored the first goal, we had, I don’t know, maybe another power with the crowd," Griezmann said of the inspiring atmosphere. "It was amazing. They pushed a lot."

Interim head coach Martín Perelman praised Griezmann's performance, saying: "He is a great example of what a great football player can be. We are extremely lucky to be able to count on him." Perelman also acknowledged that Griezmann still needs time to adapt to the league, saying: "He is one of the best players in the history of the game. We need to enjoy him."

The win marks Orlando City's fourth victory in five matches, with Griezmann scoring in three of those wins. The team now heads to Allianz Field to take on Minnesota United FC in a pivotal cross-conference matchup on Saturday.

Griezmann's impact on the team has been significant, with Perelman saying: "We need to enjoy being able to have him. It is an obligation. I enjoy having him here, his teammates do as well, as do the fans." The French World Cup winner has now scored in three of Orlando's four wins since his arrival.

Orlando City's playoff push continues on Saturday, as they look to build on their recent momentum. With Griezmann leading the charge, the Lions are confident of their chances. "We need to continue working," Perelman said. "It was a very important victory. A tough one, a needed one. It was important, but it was three points. Now we need to rest to then be able to come back during the week, work, improve as much as we can, compete, and get the result in Minnesota, which is never easy."
