Deone Walker needed only 10 defensive snaps to make his presence felt in the Bills' 29-14 preseason victory over the Carolina Panthers.

He recorded three tackles, a sack, and a tackle for loss as Buffalo's starting defense overwhelmed Carolina early.

Defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard was impressed by Walker's on-field performance, but also by what he saw in his mind.

"He's a student of the game," Leonhard said. "Like, he's really bright."

Leonhard praised Walker's ability to communicate on the sideline, picking up on things he saw and heard during the game.

"That was really cool to see as a coach because not every player can do that and not every player wants to do that," Leonhard said.

Walker's physical ability was also on full display, helping to blow up Carolina's second possession with a sack of quarterback Bryce Young.

The Panthers punted again, unable to overcome the Bills' stifling defense.

Walker's performance was a promising sign for the Bills, who are looking to build on their success from last season.

The Bills drafted Walker in the fourth round with the No. 109 overall pick in 2025 after his production dipped during his final season at Kentucky.

However, Walker quickly outplayed his draft position, appearing in all 17 games as a rookie and starting 16.

He finished with 39 tackles, eight tackles for loss, four quarterback hits, four passes defended, and a sack.

Walker is now building on that promising rookie season, and his performance against the Panthers suggests he could be a key contributor to the Bills' defense.

Walker's flexibility and versatility up front are major assets for the Bills, who are looking to move him around and find ways to utilize his skills.

"For us, it's going to be fun finding ways to move him and put him in different places," Leonhard said.

Walker is excited about the possibilities, and feels comfortable with the trust and autonomy that comes with playing in the Bills' defense.

"Just being able to play more free," Walker said. "That's the main thing."

Walker has built a strong bond with his teammates, who have his back and give him the freedom to make plays.

"The way that our D-line group is, those are my brothers," Walker said. "We talk every day. It's just being 100% comfortable with them, having that camaraderie."

Walker is now looking to build on his promising performance, and is excited to see how he will be used in the Bills' defense this season.

As the Bills prepare for their next preseason game, Walker's performance will be one to watch, and could be a key factor in their success.

The Bills will take on the Detroit Lions in their next preseason game, and Walker will look to continue his impressive form.
