About 80 runners, including an 82-year-old woman who had serious surgery last year, took part in the Fans to 5k event in North Bristol, representing their clubs in a charity league that rewards exercise with points.
The initiative, set up by football fans to promote health and fitness among supporters, has attracted 840 participants from across the UK, representing football clubs, rugby clubs, cricket clubs, and community organisations.
Founder Grant Rees, a Bristol Rovers fan, wanted to "gamify" a 10-week Couch to 5k programme, allowing participants to earn points for their team based on their exercise. "Everyone can use this, everyone can be a part of it and represent their club," Rees said.
The challenge is accessible through a free app, which also includes a training plan for those who need it. Participants can earn points by following the training plan or by doing their own daily mile. "The more miles you carry out, the more points for your club," Rees explained.
The league is capped at five miles to make it inclusive for everyone. Rees' goal is to "harness the rivalry" between fans for good. "Healthy rivalry" is the initiative's strapline, and Rees believes that it's a way to bring people together while promoting physical activity.
Wendy Watson, 82, who had surgery last year, was one of the participants. "If I can do it, anyone can," she said. "Get out there, do it, and it's better than sitting. Sitting is the new smoking."
Ray Watson, 77, who had a heart attack five years ago, also took part in the event. "Any form of movement is good," he said. "It doesn't have to be running, it could just be walking." He was "chuffed" to have finished the event, despite not being able to run anymore.
The Fans to 5k initiative is open to anyone, regardless of their fitness level or age. The app is free to download, and the challenge is ongoing. Rees is encouraging people to join in and represent their clubs. "We're going to use that rivalry for good," he said.
The initiative has already attracted a lot of interest, with many people signing up to participate. Rees is hoping to break down barriers and make the challenge accessible to everyone. "The more people want to take part, the merrier," he said.
The Fans to 5k event is just the beginning of the initiative. Rees plans to continue promoting physical activity and healthy rivalry among football fans. With 840 participants already signed up, it's clear that the initiative is gaining momentum.
