The University of Connecticut men's basketball program is set to hire a new general manager, with Charlie Stevens, a San Antonio Spurs executive, taking the reins.
Stevens, a Bronx native and former Clark University basketball player, was a two-year captain of the Clark University men's basketball team before graduating in 2021. He was hired by the Spurs right after graduation as a basketball operations strategy and scouting assistant.
The hiring is the latest in a string of connections between the UConn men's basketball program and the San Antonio Spurs. Last year, the Spurs drafted Tarris Reed Jr., a 6-foot-11 center who helped lead UConn to its third national championship game in four years.
The UConn men's basketball program has been looking for a general manager with NBA experience and overseas ties to fill the position. Stevens, who has massive connections throughout the basketball world, is expected to be officially announced by UConn later this week.
Stevens will take over for Tom Moore, who held the newly-created position for one year before announcing his retirement last month. Moore wore many hats in his one season in the position, part of the reason he decided to call it a career at age 61.
The new general manager will deal with name, image and likeness and transfer portal issues, among other duties. It remains to be seen exactly what Stevens' role and duties will be under Dan Hurley.
The UConn men's basketball program has been building a strong connection with the San Antonio Spurs in recent years. Stephon Castle, a lottery pick by the Spurs in 2024, was NBA Rookie of the Year in 2024-25 and helped lead the Spurs to the NBA Finals this past season.
The hiring of Stevens is expected to be officially announced by UConn later this week. The program's fans and alumni will be watching to see how he shapes the team's future.
