A medal ceremony at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham was postponed on Saturday evening after a man was arrested on suspicion of fraud.
Transport at the tournament was suspended following the arrest, leaving thousands of spectators unable to leave the event.
A statement from Birmingham 2026 said the safety and wellbeing of spectators, athletes, and the wider Championships' family would always be their first priority. They acknowledged the delays caused challenges for those affected and thanked everyone for their patience and cooperation.
A West Midlands Police spokesperson confirmed that a man in his 30s remained in custody for questioning.
The incident occurred during the evening session, which concluded with Great Britain winning a pair of gold medals in the men's and women's 4x100m relays.
The crowd at the Alexander Stadium, which has a capacity of 23,000, was held outside by security staff for more than an hour after the event finished.
A statement on the event's official account, posted on X at 23:03, apologised for the significant delays in leaving the venue and assured spectators that buses and coaches would start to arrive and departures would gradually take place.
The postponement of the medal ceremonies was understood to be in relation to the police incident, with six ceremonies scheduled to take place after the final event between 22:00 and 23:00 BST.
The situation has sparked widespread curiosity among athletics fans, who are eager to know more about the circumstances surrounding the arrest and its impact on the Championships.
