Chase Burns delivered a dominant performance, limiting the Miami Marlins to just four hits and no walks in seven innings as the Cincinnati Reds edged the Marlins 1-0 on Friday night.
Burns (14-2) struck out eight batters and threw 131 innings this season, already surpassing his previous best of 66 innings in the minor leagues. His impressive outing marked his second win in a row, after a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on August 5.
The Reds' lone run came in the sixth inning when Eugenio Suárez hit an RBI double, breaking up Sandy Alcantara's scoreless streak. Alcantara (13-7) had been holding the Reds hitless for the first five innings and extended his scoreless innings streak to a career-long 25 2/3 dating back to July 28.
Earlier, Alcantara had allowed just one runner to reach second base, and it wasn't until the seventh inning that he struck out two batters. His previous best scoreless streak of 25 straight innings came in 2022, and this season he had already achieved a scoreless streak of 20 or more innings.
The Marlins were shut out for the seventh time this season, with Emilio Pagán closing out the game for the Reds in the ninth inning. Pagán, who was experiencing hand soreness but was cleared to pitch on Friday, retired the Marlins in order to secure his 15th save.
Later, the Reds loaded the bases in the eighth inning but were unable to push across another run. The Marlins' Josh Ekness pitched a strong eighth inning, fanning three straight batters.
The Reds will look to build on Burns' strong performance in their next match against the Marlins. On Saturday, Marlins RHP Ryan Gusto (0-3, 4.78 ERA) will face Reds RHP Brady Singer (5-11, 4.66) in a matchup that could see the Marlins bounce back from their shutout loss.
