The Brewers stunned the Dodgers with a thrilling 9th-inning comeback, scoring four consecutive singles to tie the game before Jackson Chourio's base hit in the bottom of the ninth gave them a 5-4 win.
Shane Drohan and Roki Sasaki had a relatively smooth start, but the game turned in the top of the fourth. Gary Sánchez led off with a base hit, and the Brewers loaded the bases with one out. Joey Ortiz walked in the first run, and David Hamilton walked in another to give the Brewers a 2-0 lead.
Drohan finally allowed a run in the fifth after Miguel Rojas walked and scored on a Ben Rortvedt single. He came back out for the sixth but was clearly flagging, retiring Andy Pages on a hard line drive before walking Tommy Edman. Freddie Freeman then battled Drohan for nine pitches before successfully challenging a called strike three, resulting in a second straight walk.
The Dodgers responded in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer from Max Muncy, taking a 4-2 lead. DL Hall retired six straight batters in the seventh and eighth innings, but the Brewers couldn't score. Dodgers closer Edwin Díaz came in to try to slam the door on the Brewers in the top of the ninth.
However, the Brewers had other plans. William Contreras struck out for the first out, but Ortiz and Hamilton both came through in the clutch, lining singles through the infield to put runners on the corners. Chourio worked the count full before swinging at a slider half a foot off the plate, poking it into shallow right-center for a base hit, scoring Ortiz and putting the tying run, Hamilton, on third.
The Brewers then got back-to-back singles from Garrett Mitchell and Jackson Chourio, scoring Hamilton to tie the game. With two outs and the game still tied, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts opted to go to his bullpen, calling on lefty Alex Vesia to face Jake Bauers. Bauers hit a ground ball through the right side that found a gap and trickled into right field for a single, scoring Chourio to put the Brewers ahead 5-4.
The bottom of the ninth was anticlimactic, with Trevor Megill coming in to retire the side in order and secure the first victory of the road trip. The Brewers will look to keep the momentum going tomorrow, with Robert Gasser set to face Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Dodgers in a West Coast night game.
