The Oregon Ducks are in the midst of a quarterback battle, with four-star prospect Tristin Gaines emerging as a top target.
The Ducks will host Gaines on Oct. 10 in Eugene, when Oregon plays UCLA, and he is expected to visit multiple times this season.
Gaines, a dual-threat quarterback from Waller, Texas, is currently ranked as the No. 8 quarterback in the 2028 class and No. 86 overall. He is a star on the baseball diamond, winning a pair of gold medals with USA Baseball.
According to Rivals' Sam Spiegelman, Oregon is recruiting Gaines the hardest right now, making them the new leader in the race for the quarterback's services.
Gaines also has visits to Texas Tech and Michigan set for the fall, but Oregon's strong connection with him has made them a top contender.
Gaines has been in constant contact with the Oregon coaching staff, including quarterbacks coach Koa Ka'ai, and has visited Eugene in the offseason.
As a sophomore, Gaines passed for 2,016 yards and 22 touchdowns while rushing for 542 yards and nine more scores.
Oregon is not the only school after Gaines, however, with the Ducks likely to pursue multiple quarterbacks in the 2028 class, including current leader Josiah Boyd.
Boyd will visit Oregon for the Ducks' Friday night contest against Portland State on Sept. 18, and the Ducks will likely pursue both Boyd and Gaines in the coming months.
Oregon also holds a commitment from 2027 quarterback Will Mencl, but the Ducks are looking to bolster their quarterback depth in the 2028 class.
With a year until signing day, the Ducks have time to make their move for Gaines and other top prospects in the class.
Gaines will be in Eugene alongside fellow Oregon targets in the 2028 class, including four-star receiver Jayce Halasz and five-star edge rusher Kameron McGee, on Oct. 10.
