The Dolphins Need a Strong Preseason to Rebuild Their Roster
The Miami Dolphins are one of the eight NFL teams that need this preseason the most, with a new quarterback, receiver battle, and question marks in their secondary.
The Dolphins don't have a quarterback battle, but they do have a new signal-caller in Malik Willis. He flashed starting potential in limited action with the Green Bay Packers over the last two years, but it was a pretty small sample size.
Malik Willis is learning a new system and does not have the kind of weaponry he benefited from in Green Bay. The preseason reps are essential for him to adapt to the new system and players.
The Dolphins also have a receiver battle with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle gone. Malik Washington is the returning leader, but Miami also brought in Jalen Tolbert and TuTu Atwell in free agency. Then, there are the rookies, including Caleb Douglas and Chris Bell.
The Dolphins' secondary has some question marks and appears to be one of the worst in the NFL on paper. Several players on the back end are banged up right now.
New general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan spent the No. 27 overall pick on former San Diego State corner Chris Johnson, who figures to start immediately.
At safety, Dante Trader Jr., Zayne Anderson, Lonnie Johnson Jr., and Louis Moore are competing for spots. Also, keep an eye on fifth-round pick Michael Taaffe out of Texas.
The preseason will help figure out who fits the Dolphins' system best and to unearth gems that went overlooked during the draft.
Miami's depth chart will form, and position battles will be settled. It's crucial for the Dolphins to get their roster solidified before the regular season starts.
The Dolphins have a lot to sort out in their secondary, and the preseason will provide valuable insights into how they'll shape up.
The Dolphins' preseason begins on August 12th, with a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
