Russell Westbrook Calls Time on 18-Year NBA Career
Westbrook, a nine-time All-Star and the 2017 NBA MVP, has retired after an illustrious 18 seasons in the league. The 37-year-old guard, who played for seven different franchises, finished his career as the NBA's all-time leader in triple-doubles with 209.
The Seattle SuperSonics selected Westbrook with the fourth overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, and he went on to play for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, and Sacramento Kings.
Westbrook's impressive resume includes nine All-NBA teams, two All-Star Game MVPs, and two scoring titles. He led the league in assists three times and is one of three players to average a triple-double for an entire season, a feat he achieved four times.
In his 1,301 career games, Westbrook averaged 20.9 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 8.0 assists. He is 14th on the all-time scoring list with 27,176 points and fifth in assists with 10,351. Only LeBron James has joined him in the exclusive club of players with at least 25,000 points and 10,000 assists.
Westbrook's retirement announcement was made in a social media video, narrated by actor Michael B. Jordan, with the caption "Sometimes you don't even know when you've already watched the end. You had to be there. And now it's over."
