The Commanders have signed veteran defensive tackle Byron Cowart, strengthening their defensive line after D.J. Davidson's retirement.
Ben Standig, Washington beat reporter, broke the news on Monday evening, citing a source that the Commanders are expected to sign DT Byron Cowart.
Cowart has been in the NFL since 2019, when the New England Patriots drafted him in the fifth round of the NFL draft. The University of Maryland product has played regular-season games for the Patriots, Colts, and Bears. He also spent time on Miami's practice squad.
The 4-year veteran has played in 51 games, starting 21, with 67 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and a pass defensed to his credit.
Cowart was one of eight players to try out for the Commanders on Monday, alongside other defensive players such as DE Carlos Watkins and LB Amari Burney.
The Commanders are expected to announce the corresponding move, likely to be made by head coach Dan Quinn, before Tuesday morning's practice.
Cowart's addition brings much-needed depth to the defensive tackle position, which was thinned by D.J. Davidson's retirement earlier this summer.
