Aug. 6—MITCHELL — The Garretson Blue Jays defeated the Lesterville Broncs 11-1 in the first round of the Class B state amateur baseball tournament, securing a spot in the second round.
The Blue Jays' convincing win was made possible by three runs in the first inning and five more in the third, resulting in a total of 11 hits and 11 runs on the scoreboard. Garretson's opponent, Lesterville, struggled with four errors throughout the game.
Sam Siegel was a standout player for the Blue Jays, hitting a home run, scoring four runs, and recording four RBIs. Robin Chute also contributed significantly with three hits and three RBIs. Scott Splett drove in a pair of runs for Garretson.
The Blue Jays received a significant boost in the third inning when Siegel hit a three-run double to right field, which was lost in the sun by the Lesterville defense. This increased the lead to 7-0. Chute added a two-RBI double moments later, giving the Blue Jays a 9-0 edge through three frames.
Derek Fischer controlled the game on the mound for Garretson, throwing all seven innings and tossing 93 pitches. He allowed six hits, one run, and struck out five batters. The Lesterville defense struggled to contain the Blue Jays' offense.
Lesterville broke up the shutout in the fourth inning when Dawson Bietz hit an RBI single to center field, scoring Michael Drotzmann. The Broncs had six hits for the game, with two from Tyler Edler.
The Garretson Blue Jays will now face Dell Rapids PBR in the second round of the tournament, which will be a rematch of the 2024 Class B semifinal round. The game will take place on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The Blue Jays are looking to bounce back from their loss in the 2024 semifinals, where they were defeated by Dell Rapids PBR 5-3.
