The Detroit Lions' linebacker room has undergone significant changes, and one player is poised to take on a bigger role: Derrick Barnes.
Barnes is expected to be a key figure for the 2026 season, following the departure of Alex Anzalone in the offseason. With Anzalone's move to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Barnes has been expanding his role on defense.
According to Detroit Lions senior writer and insider Tim Twentyman, Barnes has been playing an increased role in passing downs when the Lions are in nickel defense. He had a notable play during Thursday's practice when he intercepted a Jared Goff pass intended for tight end Sam LaPorta.
Barnes explained his thought process behind the interception: "The way our defense is designed on that play, the position I'm playing, the job I'm doing on that specific play, it's kind of hard to see where I am in the coverage we're in and what my role is for the quarterback." He added, "I was kind of reading JG (Goff) a little bit, his eye progression, seeing a few routes coming across the field and I was like, 'Maybe I can just get in the window.'"
This season, Barnes will be playing more of the WILL role, which he's studied extensively on film. He's been analyzing Alex Anzalone's technique in the passing game, trying to replicate what Anzalone brought to the Lions' defense. "I'm super excited for the role and the challenge," Barnes said. "Got to come out here every day and earn it."
Barnes' health will be crucial to his success this season. He did briefly leave the field during Tuesday's practice, but it was just a minor knee injury. He's expected to be fine and is coming off a healthy 2025 season, where he played in all 17 games.
The expanded role for Barnes may open up opportunities for him to make more game-changing plays like turnovers and sacks. In 2025, Barnes logged one interception and four sacks. With Barnes playing out in space more on passing downs, his interception numbers could increase. The Lions will be counting on him for these kinds of plays, especially given the uncertain status of star safeties Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch.
Barnes' growth and increased role will be closely watched as the Lions prepare for the 2026 season. The team's linebacker room is looking more promising, and Barnes is ready to take on the challenge.
