Jordan Henderson has completed a £20m move to Chelsea, ending his brief stint at Brentford.
The 36-year-old midfielder, who captained Liverpool to the Premier League title in 2019-20, has signed a two-year deal with the Blues. Henderson's departure from Brentford was announced in a mutual termination of his contract.
Henderson's career has taken a significant turn in recent years. He moved to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq in 2023, before joining Dutch side Ajax in January 2024. Last summer, he returned to the Premier League with Brentford, making 32 top-flight appearances in 2025-26.
Henderson's experience and leadership will be valuable assets to Chelsea, who are rebuilding under new boss Xabi Alonso. The former Liverpool captain has a strong track record, winning the Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup twice, the Uefa Super Cup, and the Fifa Club World Cup during his time at Anfield.
Chelsea have been busy in the transfer market this summer, with Henderson the 10th player to join the club. The Blues have agreed a club-record £117m deal to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, while also signing striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton and midfielder Valentin Barco from Strasbourg.
Henderson's move to Chelsea comes after a successful international career with England. He earned his first cap in 2010 and has played in seven major international competitions, including the final of the European Championship in 2021. He also became the first Englishman to feature in four different World Cups this summer, albeit briefly due to injury.
Henderson's comments on his move to Chelsea are telling. "Given the size of the club, the manager [Xabi Alonso] who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn't turn down," he said. "For me, it's about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I'm very excited to get going."
The 36-year-old's enthusiasm is clear, and Chelsea fans will be eager to see him in action soon. With Henderson on board, the Blues will be looking to build on their 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season. New boss Xabi Alonso has a lot of work to do, but with Henderson's experience and leadership, Chelsea might just be the team to watch this season.
