Eintracht Frankfurt have landed Nigerian international Raphael Onyedika in a €3.5m deal from Belgian champions Club Brugge.
The 25-year-old midfielder has signed a long-term contract with Frankfurt, who beat competition from several clubs, including teams from Saudi Arabia, to secure his signature.
Frankfurt had identified Onyedika as their top target for the defensive midfield role due to his physical presence, ball-winning ability, and extensive Champions League experience. The Nigerian made 183 appearances for Club Brugge, winning two Belgian league titles as well as the Belgian Cup and Super Cup during his four-year spell in Belgium.
Onyedika's arrival is expected to give head coach Adi Hütter a commanding presence in midfield as Frankfurt aim to return to European competition after missing out last season. The Nigerian's physical presence and ability to win the ball back will be crucial in helping the team dominate possession and control in midfield.
The transfer package is worth up to €21 million, making Onyedika one of the club's biggest signings in history. He shares the fourth spot in Frankfurt's most expensive signings with Jonathan Burkardt and Ritsu Doan.
Onyedika's Champions League experience will be valuable for Frankfurt as they look to regain their European footing. The Nigerian has played in the top European competition before and will be able to provide guidance and leadership to his teammates.
