The Washington Commanders' 2023 Training Camp Riser: Who Takes the Crown?
The Washington Commanders have a rich history of training camp risers, but one player stands out above the rest. ESPN recently named the best training camp/preseason riser for all 32 NFL teams over the years, and for the Commanders, it was easy.
Every year, fans attach themselves to one player, but more often than not, that story ends without the player making a significant impact. However, there have been a few notable exceptions, including Colt Brennan, Marcus Mason, Jaret Patterson, and Robert Davis, who all captivated Washington fans over the years.
The Commanders' 2023 training camp riser is a story that has captivated fans for decades. According to ESPN, the best training camp/preseason riser in Commanders history is none other than legendary offensive tackle Joe Jacoby.
Jacoby was a late addition as an undrafted free agent out of Louisville in 1981. He was so low on the roster that coach Joe Gibbs initially thought he was a defensive lineman. Despite this, Jacoby eventually started 13 games as a rookie (eight at left tackle) and went on to become a fixture at left tackle over the next eight seasons.
The Hogs, the Commanders' iconic offensive line unit, was a dominant force in the 1980s and early '90s. Jacoby was the linchpin on this unit, lining up across from some of the best players of all-time, including Lawrence Taylor and Reggie White.
Despite his impressive career, Jacoby has yet to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The organization has long felt he belongs in the Hall of Fame, calling him the best player on the Hogs.
ESPN got this one right. Jacoby's story is one for the ages, and his induction into the Hall of Fame is long overdue.
