The 2026 season is a "prove-it" year for Josh Uche, a veteran front-seven defender the Miami Dolphins acquired to bolster their squad after losing several key players.
Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley views Uche's season as a chance for him to say, "I can still do this." Hafley has noticed Uche's hard work throughout the summer and believes the 27-year-old defender is "a very mature person" who is "very smart."
Uche has been unable to replicate the 11.5 sack-level production he had in the 2022 season. Injuries and declining production and snap counts have placed him on the National Football League carousel in recent seasons. Outside of the 2022 breakout season, Uche has accounted for just 10 sacks across five years with three teams.
Uche is a Miami native who grew up playing football in the city's weather. He spoke about adding more "violence to his attack," but also took a moment to address 2022, as well as lending his experience to a younger defense. "We're a young team and obviously there's a role to be filled of coaching up the guys," Uche said.
The Dolphins need Uche to be successful, and Uche needs Miami. It's a personnel marriage that could work, but it's a risk. Uche has been working hard to prove himself, and it seems like he's in the right place to do so.
In light of this, Uche doesn't have any statistical objectives this year, focusing instead on the goal of "being the best player" he can be. "Maybe that means I start," he said. "Maybe it doesn't. I know I'm capable. I know I have the skill."
Uche's past success in the league has been a mixed bag. He's had some really good seasons, including his breakout 2022 campaign. However, he's also had seasons where he's struggled with injuries and declining production.
The Dolphins will need Uche to step up and contribute to their defense. With a young team, they're looking for veterans like Uche to lead by example. Uche's experience and skill could be just what they need to succeed.
The Dolphins will open the 2026 season on September 10th against the New England Patriots. The game will be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
