FC Tokyo's Unbeaten Streak Reaches 17 Matches: What Makes This Japanese Giant So Special

FC Tokyo's incredible unbeaten streak has reached 17 matches, leaving fans and opponents alike wondering what makes this Japanese giant so special.

The club plays its home games at Ajinomoto Stadium, which seats just under 50,000 spectators, and has earned the nickname "Aoaka" (Japanese for blue-red) due to its dominant colors in the cityscape around the stadium.

Former Inter players are the biggest names at FC Tokyo, with Takefusa Kubo being a prominent example. The attacking player once transferred from FC Tokyo to Real Madrid and is now one of the best attacking players in the Spanish league while playing for Real Sociedad.

Brazilian striker Marcelo Ryan, homegrown talent Kota Tawaratsumida, and winger Kein Sato are among FC Tokyo's best-known players today. Sei Muroya transferred from FC Tokyo to Hannover 96 in 2020 and played there for two years alongside Maxi Beier, before returning to Tokyo in the summer of 2025.

Another big name in Japanese soccer is Yuto Nagatomo, who, at 39, is the oldest player on the team. The left back has 146 senior international caps to his name and can look back on a distinguished career in Europe's top leagues.

Under head coach Rikizo Matsuhashi, FC Tokyo ranks among the strongest teams in the J1 League, relying on bold possession-based soccer, fast-paced build-up play, and the strategic integration of their own young talents.

The club has taken a different path than many of its competitors in Japanese soccer, emphasizing a down-to-earth and authentic image since its founding 28 years ago. Instead of fanciful names or a club mascot, FC Tokyo focuses on its on-field performance and the development of its players.

FC Tokyo will host BVB at the National Stadium for a friendly match, before kicking off the new J1 League season against FC Machida Zelvia one week later.
