Lions Safety Kerby Joseph Takes the Mic, Directs Injury Questions to New Rap Song
Kerby Joseph, the Detroit Lions' All-Pro safety, has sidestepped questions about his knee injury and potential return to the field by directing fans to his new rap song, "Fly Today," on his YouTube channel.
Joseph, who has been sidelined since last October, was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list on Sunday. Lions coach Dan Campbell said Wednesday that he doesn't expect Joseph to be ready for Week 1. However, the safety has shown some progress, including Wednesday, when he was running up the hill next to the practice fields in Allen Park.
Joseph was asked if he felt any better today than he did six to eight months ago, and he responded, "Honestly, the best way I could describe that right there, I got a YouTube channel …it'll tell you everything you need to know. It's called 'Fly Today.' I got a song that dropped; it's called 'Fly Today.' Y'all go check it out, it sounds pretty good."
The 25-year-old safety, who is entering the second year of a four-year, $86 million contract, credited his journey with God for keeping him upbeat throughout the unpredictable rehab process.
Joseph described himself as a "part-time rapper" and "full-time football player" when asked about his new rap song. He credited God for bringing people into his life and providing optimism during the rehab process.
When asked about the origin of his knee injury, Joseph said he woke up one day last year and his knee was swollen. He missed time in training camp and was ready for the regular season.
The Lions are expecting to be shorthanded at the safety position to start the season, with Pro Bowler Brian Branch still recovering from an Achilles injury that ended his 2025 season last December.
Joseph's decision to direct injury questions to his rap song has raised eyebrows in the NFL community. As the Lions prepare for the upcoming season, fans and analysts will be watching to see if Joseph can make a successful return to the field.
