Sara Brewer, Torrington's new athletic director, has set her sights on recharging school spirit with Raiders athletics.
As the newly appointed athletic director for Torrington High School, Brewer is eager to get the student body and the entire city excited about the Raiders. "I want to get the rest of our school involved more," Brewer said. "I want to pack the gym for volleyball, pack the gym for basketball, pack the stands for soccer and football, and get them out for baseball and softball."
Brewer brings a wealth of experience to the role, having spent 15 years at Torrington High School in various capacities. She was originally an athletic trainer for the school before joining the faculty as an allied health and sports medicine teacher. Brewer has also taught at the school for several years, giving her a deep understanding of the community and its needs.
In her previous role, Brewer successfully revived the girls' tennis team, which was struggling with low enrollment and a lack of facilities. With the help of her colleague Maggie Magillicuddy, Brewer rekindled interest in the program and grew it to 35 players by the spring. The team even got to debut six new on-campus tennis courts last spring, which are the envy of the Naugatuck Valley League.
Brewer's experience in equestrian sports has also taught her the importance of teamwork and camaraderie. "I was successful," Brewer said, "but it wasn't about the ribbons, though I do love blue. It was about the camaraderie. It was about working with this 2,000-pound animal and trying to convince him that he wanted to do what I wanted him to do."
As athletic director, Brewer will oversee all high school and middle school sports, including the girls' swim team, which will be taken over by Juan Moreno and Erin Sullivan this fall. Brewer's goal is to improve fitness scores among the district's children, which will be a key focus of her tenure.
Brewer's appointment comes after the retirement of Mike McKenna, who held the position for many years. Brewer is excited to take on the challenge and is already making her mark on the school. With her passion for sports and her experience in the community, Brewer is well-positioned to lead the Raiders to new heights.
As the new athletic director, Brewer will be tasked with increasing school spirit and getting the community involved in Raiders athletics. With her enthusiasm and dedication, it's clear that Brewer is the right person for the job.
