A trio of college basketball teams known for their breakneck pace will face off in a three-game season-opening showcase in Greenville, Illinois, with the Grinnell Pioneers and Greenville Panthers, both averaging over 100 points per game, set to clash with Covenant College.
The three teams will showcase their extreme style of play, known as the "System," which involves constant full-court pressure, quick shots, and mass substitutions. This approach has led to some astonishing numbers, with Greenville averaging 113.2 points per game last season, 22 points more than Division I leader Alabama.
Grinnell, the Division III standard for System success, has been perfecting this strategy for years, and its former coach, David Arseneault Sr., is widely credited with pioneering the System at Grinnell in the 1990s. His son, David Arseneault Jr., is now in charge and putting his own stamp on the System.
The Grinnell Pioneers have been humming along, averaging 102.9 points per game in 2025-26, while also finishing in the top-50 nationally in defensive efficiency. They will face off against Greenville, which has not relinquished the scoring crown since 2015-16.
Covenant College, a relatively new adherent to the philosophy, has seen a surge in success since adopting the System. Coach Josh Brown decided to try the approach after calling an estimated 35-40 coaches and brainstorming about its merits and pitfalls. "Every single one of them was like, 'you're going to get called crazy,'" Brown recalled. "It's just a part of it. I was OK with being crazy."
The System has been pared down to fit within the outer limits of what most believe could be sustainable at the Division I level, but programs such as Alabama, Texas A&M, and Cal Poly are finding success utilizing elements of it. However, they are snails compared to the three who will assemble in Greenville for a lab session on college basketball's speed frontier.
The three teams will play each other over the course of 36 hours, with Grinnell facing off against Covenant College in the first game, followed by Greenville taking on Covenant College in the second game. The schedule is designed to celebrate a style of play that most believe will never be fully adopted in Division I.
According to Greenville coach George Barber, "I keep asking Dr. Barber when he's going to retire so that we can lead the country in scoring again." Barber has been pushing the System further, and his team's average of 113.2 points per game last season was 22 points more than Division I leader Alabama.
The three games will showcase the speed and skill of these teams, and fans are in for a treat as they watch the Grinnell Pioneers, Greenville Panthers, and Covenant College Scots battle it out on the court.
The season-opening showcase will get underway on November 6 in Greenville, Illinois, with the Grinnell Pioneers facing off against Covenant College in the first game.
