Ja'seem Reed has made a strong impression in the Carolina Panthers' training camp, but he still faces an uphill battle to secure a roster spot in the team's crowded wide receiver room.
The 2025 undrafted free agent has consistently shown his skills, particularly in Sunday's practice where he made several big-play catches, including one where he outran defensive backs Zakee Wheatley and Robert Rochelle on a "go" route.
Panthers coach Dave Canales praised Reed's performance, saying: "He's consistent. He knows the concepts, he's a really smart guy—and he's been that way since we got him. A guy we have a lot of trust in. And then, he just keeps making plays."
Reed has been working hard to get noticed in the Panthers' wide receiver room, which appears to be loaded with talent. Five players appear to be locks for the roster, including NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Tetairoa McMillan, Jalen Coker, Xavier Legette, rookie Chris Brazzell II, and veteran David Moore.
Among the second-tier wideouts, free agent addition John Metchie III, Jimmy Horn Jr., and Brycen Tremayne could have inside tracks at earning roster spots. However, at least one of the trio is likely to be cut before the 53-man roster is finalized.
Tremayne himself had a notable performance in Sunday's practice, beating safety Isaiah Simmons on a deep touchdown pass. However, he was also involved in a scary moment when Simmons shoved him from behind, causing him to fall into the electrical boxes bolted on the chain-linked fence.
Reed, on the other hand, seems to be making progress in his bid to secure a roster spot. With the preseason just around the corner, he will need to continue making big plays to elbow his way into the crowded wide receiver room.
The Panthers will face the Arizona Cardinals in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on August 6, less than two weeks from now. This will be a crucial test for Reed and other players vying for roster spots.
