Australian World Cup star Cristian Volpato allegedly tested positive for cocaine after he was stopped for driving over the speed limit in Sydney, police said.
New South Wales police claim Volpato was clocked driving at 109km/h, 50km/h over the speed limit, on Sydney's Anzac Bridge at around 1am on Friday morning. A roadside drug test then returned a positive result for cocaine. Volpato's driver's license has been suspended for six months.
The 22-year-old made three appearances for Australia at the World Cup and was one of the team's breakout stars. Volpato had switched allegiances from Italy before the tournament.
Volpato was stopped twice by police in the early hours of Friday. Two hours earlier, at 11pm on Thursday, he was issued with an infringement notice after allegedly driving more than 20km/h over the speed limit.
An alcohol test was also conducted, but Volpato returned a negative result. New South Wales police will now examine a second sample to confirm the positive result for cocaine.
Volpato was born in Sydney but represented Italy at Under-20 level. He plays his club football for Italian side Sassuolo, having joined Roma in 2020.
The incident has raised questions about Volpato's off-field behavior. The Australian football community will be watching to see how this situation develops.
A second sample will be examined to confirm the positive result for cocaine.
